Scope of electrical engineering
Electrical engineering is the study of electricity, electronics and magnetism along with their various applications in modern engineering systems. Electrical engineering incorporates various sub-fields such as communications, control system, power, instrumentation, etc. Electricity has always been a fascinating subject in Physics and the students who want to take up a career in electricity can opt for btech Electrical Engineering courses offered by many engineering colleges in India and abroad.
What is the course content?
B.Tech program in electrical engineering spans four years
which is usually divided into eight semesters. The students are taught the
various concepts related to electricity and electric machineries. A thorough
technical knowledge of various electrical machines such as motors, generators
and transformers are imparted to the students along with the knowledge of AC
current, DC current, electromagnetism, control systems, circuits and many more.
The first year of btech Electrical Engineering courses deals
with many common engineering subjects such as engineering physics and
mathematics, mechanics of solids, engineering graphics, elements of mechanical
and electrical engineering, etc. The various topics specifically related to
electricity are introduced in the second year such as circuits, micro
controllers, power electronics, switchgear, electrical design, high voltage
engineering, advanced power electronics, electromagnetism, etc. The common
subjects that are taught in many semesters are electrical machine design and
engineering mathematics. Students are required to elect a subject of their
choice in different semesters. The elective subjects may be different depending
upon the college.
B.Tech electrical engineering programs also feature electrical
lab sessions for the students to get enough practical exposure in working with
electrical components. Workshops are also routinely organized by the
department.
Post graduation
M.Tech courses in Electrical Engineering are offered
in a plethora of sub-fields of electrical engineering. Some of them are listed
below
·
Control
engineering means the designing of controllers for controlling many dynamic
systems and finds application in propulsion systems of aircrafts, cruise
control in automobiles, etc. Control engineering involves electronic circuits,
microcontrollers and digital signal processors.
·
Electronics
engineering deals with the design and construction of electronic circuits and
the modern integrated circuits that are used in modern computers and other
electronic devices.
·
Power
engineering is the branch of electrical engineering that deals with the
generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and the design of
various devices such as transformers, electric motors, electric generators, etc.
·
Signal
processing deals with the various aspects of analysis and manipulation of
signals.
Other specialized fields of electrical engineering include
instrumentation, telecommunications, computer and microelectronics.
Admission
Getting admission into a B.Tech program in electrical
engineering requires the student to pass the intermediate exam with Physics and
Math prior to qualifying the entrance test. In India, JEE Mains is the
principal exam for securing a seat in B.Tech course. Individual entrance tests
are also conducted by many private universities. For example, St Andrews
Institute of Technology and Management, Gurgaon grants admission into its
B.Tech program in electrical engineering and other disciplines on the basis of
JEE rank.
M.Tech courses in Electrical Engineering are offered
by many reputed institutions in India. The engineering graduate must clear the
GATE examination to gain admission in an M.Tech course.
